VELORBIS, the mavericks of classic bicycle design, are pleased to announce the launch of The Dannebrog (pronounced ‘Dan-eh-broh’) – the beautiful new red upright bike for ladies that reflects the history and heritage of Denmark.

The kingdom of Denmark has a big heart and an equally large appreciation of cycling and the easy, chilled culture that goes with it. Copenhagen is arguably the world’s leading and most friendly bike capital in the world.

The Dannebrog classic bicycle pays homage to its namesake – the legendary national flag of Denmark and its monarchy. It is the oldest state flag in the world still in use, dating back to the 13th century. Myth has it that during the Battle of Valdemar (Volmerslaget in Danish), which took place near Lyndanisse (now Tallinn) in Estonia on 15th June 1219 the flag fell from the sky during a critical stage in the battle, resulting in Danish victory. The Dannebrog therefore remains a symbol of good luck and prosperity.

VELORBIS has taken inspiration from this royal Danish icon and has created a fitting tribute in a bicycle that has true prestige. The Dannebrog flag is red with a white Scandinavian cross that extends to the edges of the flag. This is reflected in the colour scheme of the bicycle, from the stunning, fire-engine red of the frame through to the creamy white ‘blonde’ tyres. This is a traffic-stopping bicycle.

The elegant, feminine shape of the light-weight steel lugged frame, has been taken from the timeless/ever-popular Victoria ladies model. As with all VELORBIS bicycles, this Dannebrog classic bicycle is as beautiful to ride as it is to look at. Enclosed Hub Gears

Enclosing the gears protects the machinery and the bicycle commuter from the weather, hence they involve much lower maintenance than the derailleur systems found on most bikes. Another advantage of internal gears is that they are very simple on the outside and come with a chain guard. This is a much cleaner option allowing you to ride in any clothing you choose rather than having to wear specialist cycle gear. Our Dannebrog bicycle is available with 5 or 8 speed Sturmey Archer hub gears and fully enclosed Sturmey Archer hub drum brakes.

Upright bike comfort

Victoria Dannebrog Dutch-style upright bike come with a traditionally lugged and brazed hand built diamond frame, to give an upright and relaxed and ultra convenient riding posture – widely referred to as sit-up-and-beg style. This gives a high vantage point from which bike commuters can view the traffic, as well as making it easy to look behind you and soak in all of the sights and sounds of the village, town or city.

Fully equipped

Our Dannebrog upright bike is fully equipped and comes with mudguards, mud flap, coat guards, chain guard, enclosed 3W dynamo driven head lamp AND dynamo driven rear lamp, a kick stand, ding dong bell and a stock rear rack as standard equipment. The stock rear rack has a couple of unique features that stand out. One of them is the hook on the side of the rear rack for carrying your grocery bags and another feature is the spring loaded flap on top of the rear rack to hold things secure. This is especially nice for trips to the grocery as you can slide your empty grocery bags under the flap on the way there and then hang them on the side on the way home. The Dannebrog upright bike can be easily and seamlessly integrated into your everyday routine, whether you use it for commuting, shopping or simply arriving in style to meet your friends for a coffee at the local café.

Lightweight

With all of their standard features, traditional balloon commuter bicycles tend to be heavier than carbon bikes, racer bikes and mountain bikes, etc. Therefore we have equipped our Dannebrog commuter bike models with traditionally lugged and brazed hand built diamond frames from the highest quality Chromoly steel, rather than using the traditional and heavier hi-ten steel frames you find on other steel bicycles today. These initiatives reduce the overall weight of our bicycles to stunning 18,0 kg (36 lbs) and make them a perfect fit for navigating through traffic jams, lifting on and off trains or down steps, etc. Having said this - DO NOT worry about weight. 100 million daily cyclists in Europe couldn’t tell you what their bike weighs. It’s the ride that counts, and on our Dannebrog upright commuter and utility bike, you can rest assure that you ride in style!
